Baptisms

Baptism is a powerful sacrament by which God claims us as his child and promises to be our God, washes us clean as the sign of his acceptance of us and welcomes us into the family of Christ that is the Church.

At University, we take baptism seriously. It is not something to be entered into lightly or without careful consideration. As Methodists we celebrate baptisms of infants, children and adults. If you are an adult seeking baptism for yourself, you are invited to come forward during the invitation at one of our worship services, or make an appointment to speak with a pastor to learn more about baptism.

In infant or child baptism, the parents of the child are making promises on their behalf – promising to raise them in the church and help prepare them for the day they will make their own decision to follow Christ as Lord and Savior. Therefore, we do everything we can to ensure our parents understand the depth and meaning of the sacrament of baptism.

What is Next?

If you wish to present your child for baptism, at least one parent or guardian must be an active member of University Methodist Church. If you are not yet a member and wish to join, contact Pauline Rodrigues. She will explain our process for membership and answer any questions.

We also ask that you be in worship at least two times in the six weeks prior to scheduling a baptism. If you attend worship regularly and sign in, you are already set. If not, you can begin signing in or collect the UNews (bulletin) from two different weeks.

Members should email our Baptism Coordinator, Elizabeth Mooy-Fink.  She will explain the process and send out a packet of information and the necessary paperwork to get started. You may also download the information and paperwork electronically below and get started right away. When you have completed all the steps, you can mail, drop off, or scan the documents emailing Sarah.

If you have any questions regarding your child's baptism, don't worry, you will have a chance to ask the pastor performing the baptism.

Download and fill out an Infant/Child Baptism Request (also in the packet.) This way we can make sure we have all the right information about your child and your preferences for when and where the baptism will be.

Return all completed forms to Elizabeth Mooy-Fink and you will be contacted to confirm scheduling and to set up a meeting with the pastor performing the baptism.
