A Little Different

“For truly I tell you, if you have faith the size of a[ mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.”

Matthew 17:20

August is always an exciting time in our home. It is a time when our kids are getting ready for the new school year. They are excited to see their school friends again, after the long summer break. They are excited to go shopping for school supplies and not to mention new outfits. They are excited to go to tennis tryouts, choir camps, and drama camps.

This August is a little bit different. The excitement is still there, only this time, Jon and I are also feeling a bit nervous. This fall, our youngest will be leaving home for college. As a family, we are entering a different phase in our life journey. The shopping hasn’t changed, only this time we add worry to it. Will she have enough? Will she know what to do? Have we prepared her?

For the past 3 years, I have had the honor and blessing to serve with our acolytes in the sanctuary. As young as they are, they are leaders in worship. At the start of worship, they carry in the Bible and light the candles on the altar, which helps prepare our hearts for worship. These young acolytes also serve in the Sacraments of Baptisms and Holy Communion.  Watching them serve, I am reminded of Matthew 17: 20.  It is truly amazing to witness these acolytes (some as young as 4th graders) serve with love and maturity each Sunday. Although they are young, and some may be small in stature, what they offer greatly impacts our worship experience.

To borrow Pastor Holly’s illustration from this past Sunday’s sermon, I believe that worship is fertile soil that helps our seeds of faith grow.  What our young acolytes bring on Sunday not only grows their faith but also yours and mine. On August 18, our acolytes will be back to help lead worship in the Sanctuary and after service, Jon and I will take our daughter to college. I know that worship on Sunday is going to be awesome. I know that our daughter will do fine in college and I know that Jon and I are going to be fine, as empty nesters.

After all as Jesus says, if you have faith in Him, even if it is a size of a mustard seed, it can move mountains. Now imagine what a mountain size faith can do!

Blessings,
