Being the Good News

Posted by Rev. Ben Trammell on

Christ redeemed us from that self-defeating, cursed life by absorbing it completely into himself. Do you remember the Scripture that says, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree”? That is what happened when Jesus was nailed to the cross: He became a curse, and at the same time dissolved the curse. And now, because of that, the air is cleared and we can see…
Galatians 3:13-14a (The Message)

Friends,

There is a lot of bad news in the world. Hurricanes, flooding, earthquakes, as well as broken promises, hurting bodies and more. We hear it constantly and we may be tempted to stick our fingers in our ears or turn up our music to keep from hearing all the awful things that have happened.

But that isn’t what Jesus did. Jesus walked right into the mess, the pain and the storms of this world. Jesus took the weight of all the bad news that has ever been and ever will be on the cross. Paul’s letter to the Galatians reminds us that Jesus became cursed that we might be free from all that threatens to break our hearts, steal our hopes and separate us from God.

So we grieve, pray, and serve alongside the folks recovering from storms, earthquakes and personal trauma but we are not defeated, and our hope is not extinguished. We may face the future unafraid knowing that Jesus has been for us, is with us, and makes a way ahead of us. Jesus calls us through the bad news to the blessing of sharing the good news with the world.

This Sunday will be a special one at University as our founding pastor Steve Wende will be with us in all three Sanctuary services. I hope you will be with us this Sunday to hear the good news because I know if you do, you will be inspired to join God in being the good news in your family, at work and in our community.

Blessings,
Pastor Ben
