Belonging, Dignity & Purpose

Posted by Brian Rouche on

Then the King will say, ‘I’m telling the solemn truth: Whenever you did one of these things to someone overlooked or ignored, that was me—you did it to me.’
Matthew 25:40 (MSG)

Church Family,

The scripture above is actually in the middle of “A STORY.” When the scripture spoke of being overlooked or ignored, this has been “THE STORY” for many of the amazing people that I serve every week. I’m honored to serve in our Special Needs Ministry. I’m grateful that the story being written for our community of people at University is that they are loved, accepted, supported and have a place to call home.

The Special Needs Ministry at University provides a culture of belonging, dignity and purpose to everyone who has cognitive and developmental disabilities. Each week we serve more than 200 individuals of all ages and abilities. We invite you to come and experience the exciting things that are happening through this ministry.

Every Sunday we have something for the entire family. Sundays kick off with Sunday School for kids and teens at 9:30am and our Adult Sunday School is at 11am. We serve tacos and coffee just in case you miss breakfast! At 12:15pm, we have a lively, interactive worship service called Believer’s Garden. Everyone is welcome to worship with us. This is a time of praise and worship, and fellowship, as well as a practical message. If you can’t make it in person, we also live stream this service.

Do you like to play BINGO? Come and join us on Thursdays from 7-8pm in the McCreless Gym (on South Campus) for Bingo with free prizes and free admission. EVERYONE is invited! We are always accepting donations that we can use for prizes.

We also have a day habilitation program called Helping Hands. This is a pre-vocational day-hab program that serves high-functioning adults with special needs who need a place to grow, develop skills and establish life-long friendships. Our main location is at University, but we also have a second location at First UMC in Boerne, TX.

We would love to have you serve in the Special Needs Ministry in some capacity. We are currently looking for volunteers in every area of ministry. Whether you are available one day a month or ten days a month, we have a place for you. If you are interested or would like more information, please email Brian Rouche’ at

We look forward to seeing you soon,
Brian Rouche
