Chaotic Noise to Joyful Sounds

Posted by Abigail Black on

Tumultuous: Making a loud, confused noise; uproarious.

I don’t know about you but right now, at this moment in time, in this season of life and this making of history, it feels, to me, tumultuous. Loud, constant noise, frightening sounds. Clanging. Lots and lots of clanging. It reminds me of that scene in Dr. Suess’ how the Grinch Stole Christmas where he says “One thing I can’t stand is the noise, noise, noise!” In referencing the who’s joyful exuberance of Christmas morning.

I feel a bit like the Grinch these days where the noise from the news, the world, everything seems to be too overwhelming and not at all joyful. As I sat down to write this week’s blog I couldn’t help but be brought back to the scripture Psalm 100:1, “Make a joyful noise unto the Lord all ye people,” and how the Lord never says that there won’t be other noise. Other distractions, other things to drown your noise out. There will be scary, fearful noise that may cause you to quake. The rise in prices everywhere, the fighting in Ukraine, the illness of a loved one, the struggle of a lost child.

Tumultuous, uproarious noises that would wish to silence your joyful sound. The Lord commands us to make a joyful noise. He doesn’t say it has to be loud thunderous or overtaking of the loud scary noises of the world. He only says to make a joyful noise. So, in this time of uncertainty, fear and “scary noises” as my children would call them; I challenge you to remember to make your joyful noise. It may begin as a whisper of thanks. A small sound spoken into what can seem to be a very, very dark night. But what I love about our God, is that it will not stay quiet. He will go with you into that loud, dark night and add the boldness behind your whisper. We are never facing it alone; the tumultuous noise will not be what overtakes us. For remember family, the battle has already been won.

In His love,
