Now therefore write this song, and teach it to the Israelites; put it in their mouths, in order that this song may be a witness for me against the Israelites. - Deuteronomy 31:19

Beginning January 23, on Sunday afternoons, we are offering an online class entitled Conversations on Deuteronomy. “Deuteronomy,” you might say to yourself, “could you have picked a more boring and irrelevant book?”

Believe it or not, Deuteronomy has much to offer to the current world in which we navigate. Uncertainty in the present, fear of the future, and coming through a challenging past - these are major themes looming in the background as Moses speaks to the Israelites on the banks of the Jordan River. To confront these challenges, Deuteronomy has much wisdom (both practical and timeless) to offer to God’s people, both ancient and modern.

Among the guidance, God offers through Moses are the words above: to teach the people of God the song Moses will ultimately sing over Israel. Later commentators interpreted Deuteronomy 31:19 in a profound way: “the song” of which God speaks is the entire Old Testament Law, and every generation of Israel must learn “to sing” (to live) the Law in their own way. God’s people are commanded to embrace God’s Word as their own, to sing the song of faithful covenant love anew in every generation. In order to sing this song well, the Rabbis noted, all of us must offer our voices. God’s song is not a solo but demands a full choir.

We’re calling this 5-session class “Conversations on Deuteronomy” because conversation is the way we enable God’s word to be real and powerful in our own lives. I’m hopeful that in our time together, the words of God in Deuteronomy will resound deeply in your soul and will give you the strength and assurance to continue singing your faith in challenging times.
